101.27 Carat DiamondChristie’s in Hong Kong has auctioned off a 101.27-carat diamond. That is the size of a ping-pong ball people, that is a freaking huge diamond. It is the largest colorless stone to be auctioned in Asia, and it sold for $6,200,000.

According to Reuters, “The gem, which is internally flawless but rated VVS1 (very very slightly imperfect 1st degree) for clarity was sold after patchy bidding for HK$48.5 million including the buyer’s premium, a relatively low per-carat price and at the low-end of its pre-sale estimate.”

While rare polished diamonds achieved all-time highs per carat at sales in Geneva late last year, a much-hyped 72.22 carat “D” flawless white diamond failed to sell at a Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction in April, suggesting demand for top stones may be waning due to a weakening world economy.

Higher prices on diamond sales were achieved last year at sales in Geneva. This year however prices seem to have fallen due to a weakening world economy, while some fail to sell at all. Just this April for example, a “much-hyped” 72.22-carat flawless diamond failed to sell at a Hong Kong Sotheby’s auction.

Three sketches by Spanish master Goya that have been missing for 130 years will go on sale in London in July for an expected price of up to 3 million pounds ($6 million) at Christie’s on July 8th. The Swiss owners had kept them away from daylight and never framed them. In fact, the people selling them had no idea they were missing and are don’t even know where they got them from. The three pieces were taken from two of Goya’s private sketchbooks and are still on the mounts used for the 1877 sale.

The three pieces which were last seen in 1877 are, “Witches and Women“, “The Constable Lampinos stitched inside a dead horse” and “Repentance“.

Each one is from one of the artist’s celebrated private albums, and they illustrate to perfection the inexhaustible fertility of Goya’s imagination,” said Benjamin Peronnet, head of Christie’s Old Master and 19th century drawings division.

The three works will be sold separately but are expected to collectively fetch between 2.1 and 2.9 million pounds. This doesn’t mean they will get this much as many are reporting art sales are in a decline due to world economies.

No one in the art world knew where the sketches were until they were put up for sale. A handful of others are still missing. Who knows, maybe some old masterpieces could turn up for sale in an antique shop in San Francisco for several dollars? [Reuters]
